In  a group therapy  with  kids (8-10) in our Hemophilia center  on  the topic Fears, I was glad to see that none of them mentioned being afraid of infusing Factor, or afraid  of needles.. they just talked about common fears  for their ages…snakes, spiders, monsters 🙂

I guess the team work with our nurses, social worker and myself along with the moms during the first stages of Educating for Self-infusion both for the  Prophylaxis program or just the Factor dose used at home…have brought good results!   self-infusion of Factor

Each time I have to make some blood tests or receive a shot…i must confess that I have a flashback of my childhood where they used to grab me and force me ! maybe that’s why I like to PREVENT and explain everything so carefully, with details with kids, for example  showing them the stuff we use at the center, allowing them to describe the sensations they have….

and it worked well for the children with hemophilia, with mine and with me! 🙂

I really believe that when people try (sometimes with the best intentions) to hide information, or try to trick a child to face something not pleasant…it is worse!

I remember reading years ago Kelly ‘s wonderful book “Raising a child with hemophilia” and  who believes that no baby should receive more than few tries to find the vein…it is better to stop and start later or with another nurse.
