D as Dependence : ” Trust in somebody, reliance on something , state of having to be supported by others or need of support…”
If you take a look at most psycho social professionals and nurses’ concerns in the treatment of PWH (people with hemophilia), you will find that it is about PROMOTING autonomy / independence. Independence in self care is learning to self-infuse clotting factor, is the correct registration of the doses used, taking quickly the best measures for treatment when bleeding, and creating his own world of interests, to work, to love and produce as a citizen.
A person living with hemophilia will think sometimes that he has been probably, in childhood, protected or over protected by his parents: fears of having a dangerous bleeding (in the head, or abdominal for example) is normal. But, life urges us to live it, to have relationships that make us feel important and loved. Living our lives is stronger than the fear of having a bleed.
But if we are living we have to recognize that we are all INTER-DEPENDENTS: we depend on our companion (emotionally), we count on others, they count on us…we need help sometimes (nothing wrong with that), because we are all human beings that can get sick, disable to do things occasionally.
So, even if a person with hemophilia has a disability or is going under treatment of HCV for ex. , he should be glad to be able to rely on his beloved and friend’s help. Even needy he can also GIVE good things in return to his family, his friends…..
